THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
I believe these 2 characters were English or German vaudevillians whose name were Pat & Patchon. They 2 figures “dance” when the wheel is turned. I believe that in vaudeville it was called slate dancing with slate referring to the stage. It might also be called “dancing a jig.” Pat & Patchon are posed hands on hips & their legs move freely simulating a dance movement. There are at least 4 variations of the slate dancer toy with either one or 2 dancers. The most valuable is the Mickey Mouse slate dancer followed by a number of variations featuring Charlie Chaplin. There is a variation featuring 2 African-American dancers & then there is Pat & Patchon. They are all operated by turning the side wheel, sometimes with a crank handle & others are intended to be attached to a steam engine. This one is marked WK Made In Germany D.R.G.M. WK inside a circle was the trademark of the Wilhelm Krause toy company. The logo is on the top center part of the stage curtain. I believe that the toy dates to the mid-1920s & that the different variations were produced up to the early 1930s when the Mickey Mouse would have first been for sale. Condition of the toy is excellent plus with very little evidence of play wear(actually none) on the figures or the stage. The gray base has 4 holes along the outer edge. When set up with a steam engine the base would be attached to a wood plank to keep it stable. There is some minor edge wear to the base & some small spots of corrosion on the base rim.
