The TASCAM Portastudio was the world's first four-track recorder based on a standard compact audio cassette tape. It remains one of the most popular of the "old school" analog Portastudios, making them increasingly hard to come by.
The term portastudio is exclusive to TASCAM however it is generally used to describe all self-contained cassette-based multitrack recorders dedicated to music production. The 414 MKII Portastudio is ideal for newcomers or those experienced in multitrack recording, packing high-end features into a convenient, compact and economical package. A high-speed transport, combined with Hi & Low EQ and DBX noise reduction means great sound. For convenience, there are also 2 XLR microphone inputs, and a 1/4" HiZ guitar input. Use it for demos, as a portable sketch pad, or for practicing recording techniques.
To increase the audio quality of the recording, this Portastudio uses high-speed recording, 3-3/4 ips, twice the normal speed of a standard audio cassette. It weighs in at just 4.5 lbs and measures 14.5" x 9.75" x 4" tall!

Condition:
We have decided, with the amount of work required to make these fully functional, we will only perform this particular refurb on cabinets in excellent condition. Therefore, this
gorgeous deck is in excellent condition with minor signs of use. Aside from the typical scuffing to the base, the only other thing worth mentioning is a few light scuffs to the cabinet that are too faint to make out well in the pics.
All the
original knobs are present & complete
with no yellowing. The original Power Supply has gone missing so we are including the new, overrated supply we used throughout testing. Please inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.
Service:
All decks receive a full restoration which includes the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:
The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed
Unit is dismantled so all switches & pots can be cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers)
While apart, all PC boards are inspected & questionable solder joints are re-flowed. To prevent future issues, all input/output jacks are re-flowed, whether or not they appear to need it
All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, any questionable components are replaced with overrated components
All faders are treated with DeoxIT F5, specifically designed to both clean & lubricate fader controls
Any faulty components, such as jacks, LEDs, feet, etc., are replaced
Cassette transport mechanism is cleaned & lubed with non-petroleum based lube to assure long life
All switches on the transport are thoroughly cleaned and adjusted to prevent intermittent stoppage
All belts are replaced w/ high-quality neoprene belts
Other rubber components, such as idler wheels & pinch rollers, are inspected and either rejuvenated with Rubber Renue, or replaced if questionable
All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, any questionable components are replaced with overrated components
Audio levels calibrated & balanced
Tape Speed calibrated
Tape path is cleaned and heads demagnetized
Testing:
Once serviced, this deck was set up on our test bench and all switches, functions and LED indicators work correctly, with all inputs and outputs confirmed as operational. The cassette deck also works correctly with a clear, steady playback at high-speed with minimal wow & flutter. We recorded a short test tape to all four tracks, using all four channels, and played it back with no issues. More testing was done, still there are a multitude of other features on this deck, so we can't test them all. If there is a particular function you would like tested just let us know before buying. The manual has gone missing but no worries, it can be found online (unfortunately eBay no longer allows us to put the link in the listing for you).

Portastudio 414 MKII 4-Track High-Speed Cassette Recorder
This is a cassette based (1/8") 4 track recorder that records on high bias, type II cassettes in a single direction. It has DBX type II noise reduction, which can be disengaged separately
on track 4
for timecode purposes. There is a pitch wheel that allows for 15% plus or minus speed change, putting the wheel to the maximum speed will cut down on some of the tape hiss.
There are four main channels which correspond to the four tracks. There are faders for these channels along with high and low eq knobs and pan controls. There are two stereo channels, 5-6 and 7-8 that can be used for effects routing or as auxiliary inputs. All four tracks can be recorded onto simultaneously.

When inspected, this changer showed the common issues, so the belts were replaced with high-quality neoprene, no Chinese junk here! While open, the laser lens was cleaned & carriage lubricated with non-petroleum based lube to assure long life!

One particular advantage of the Tascam 4-track Portastudio multitrack recorder 414 MkII is that it works like a professional recording studio in miniature. So if you learn to use this piece of equipment, all you need to do to work in a pro studio is scale up your knowledge - not re-learn everything from scratch.
Although this machine uses cassette tape rather than new-fangled computer trickery, its simplicity means it works straightaway every time you switch on. It doesn't crash and doesn't give you "Error - file not saved" messages.
The quality of the double-speed tape transport is well in advance of what you would normally expect from cassettes, particularly in terms of frequency response and low noise level. Then with the added DBX Noise Reduction, the tape hiss can be severely reduced.
There are two XLR inputs for microphones, and a special electric guitar input. Guitars do need these special inputs or they can sound dull.
This machine is very suitable for people who just want to get on and record, rather than endlessly mess with the equipment.
